Attn: Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern (PFO0004IY) Selection Group
I have applied for the summer internship in mechanical engineering supporting the process and machine design group in Tullahoma, TN. Across the country at KSC, and about twelve years ago, I heard the news that the Shuttle program was coming to a close. However, the kind tour guide also told this ten-year old that the first people on Mars had already been born. I exclaimed, "I don't wanna go, I hate heights!" My mother chucked and added that, "If you can't go, you can help them go!"
Since then, my friends and family have seen me set my path to be the best helper I can be. Through high school and university, I've positioned myself in leadership and individually contributing roles where I can help the most. Progressing through a robotics team, machine shop, formula student team, and manufacturing plant, I have learned the process to create technical drawings, fabricate, assemble, and verify quality. As Jacobs is a safety-driven company, under intense scrutiny from public and internal stakeholders to create value, I recognize that the most important step is how to iterate the whole process for safety and only then for value.
My internships at ATI Industrial Automation allowed me to collaborate with a community that is making a significant impact on the Earth (and Mars) through robotics. I participated in R&D testing in the design verification laboratory and the robotic applications development group. Preparing multiple engineering reports, reviews, and drawings for internal and external clients applied my basic understanding of technical communication. The individuals of ATI have succeeded in their field because their breadth of engineering understanding and interpersonal insight create opportunities. Twelve years from my start, I am now starting to see my breadth of experience growing to bear fruits.
The most recent of these fruits is my website and design showcase www.iterable.design. I coded and built this site to more easily display my engineering progression in today's online world, and because it was hard to do. I learned how to shrink my ideas into a meaningful presentation with real consequences if I fail.
I have been driven by an enamor with space technology which is around 11% of Jacobs's portfolio. In that quest, I grew a deeper understanding of the other 89%. In the world of infrastructure design and architecture, I have been known to stop and stare at buildings and pipes to think through what the designers were intending and who they wanted to help.
Because helping is what I do, I know that Jacobs is the place I need to be to help public, private, and internal technology partners reach their goals.
I appreciate your consideration,
Joseph Hill
